Our 100% Boer Goat Herd
With most of the goats in the UK bred for milk and the gaot meat market in the UK comprising mostly of leftover dairy goat stock, we soon realised the potential market of breeding goats for meat in the UK and early 2015 the idea for Hawkridge Boer Goat Farm was born.
Our herd is 100% pure breed South Africian Boer Goats that have been sired by some of the best bloodlines in the UK. Our kids are registered with the British Boar society and are all 100%. They are true to type, a stockily build, with short sturdy legs, deep shoulders ans a well-fleashed rump, good brown colouring on the head, with a predominantly white body which reflects the original appearance of the traditional South Africian herds.
Goat meat or goat's meat is the meat of the domestic goat. It is often called chevon or mutton when the meat comes from adults, and cabrito, capretto, or kid when from young animals.
Although goat meat is popular throughout the world, with an estimated 80% of the population including goat's meat in their diet, in the UK it is still a relatively undiscovered meat. With a constant news bombardment relating to all the nasties found in the supermarket meats and brands, and the problems with modern mass scale farming, it is not surprising that more people are searching for new, local and sustainable alternatives when it comes to sourcing the meat in their families diets.
Goat meat is full of flavour but the exact flavour profile very much depends on the breed of goat, and the age of the animal. Goats curry is a traditional and well know recipe, which is ideal for the older cuts of goat which require slower cooking and can take stronger spices and flovours, but at the other end of the spectrum you have Kids meat which is subtle tender and delicate.
Some people say the taste is somewhere between lamb and beef, but regardless our Boer Goat variety is guaranteed to provide succulent flesh and taste whilst affording many health benefits. Goat's meat is low in fat and cholesterol, high in iron and potassium making it an extremely healthy but delicious choice!
